CSO’s Raises Alarms Over Incessant Genocide And Ethnic Cleansing In Plateau.

By, giwa alex, Jos

Civil Society Organization(CSO’s),in plateau State has raised alarm over the incessant genocide and ethnic cleansing in plateau state on the recent attacks in some communities in plateau State.

The CSO’S under the auspices of Civil Society Organization Forum raised the alarm in a Press conference held at the Nigerian Union of Journalists Secretariat (Nuj) plateau Council on 29th December 2023 signed by it President Rev. Chris Damcher, vice president O. J Afwanks(Mrs) and it secretary Mrs Anna Kisaba.

The statement which read in part said as you all know, the Yuletide season is one of the significantly celebrated festivals in Plateau State, Nationally and Globally. Unfortunately, the people of the state woke up to the sad news of another spate of unprovoked, and unprecedented attack on innocent community dwellers in Bokkos, Mangu and Barkin Ladi LGAs on Christmas Eve and Christmas day (24 and 25′ of December 2023). The attack left hundreds dead, several injured with properties destroyed. The act is not only barbaric and devastating but also scary.

THIS IS VERY SAD, UNFORTUNATE AND UNACCEPTABLE by any standard. It is an act of cowardice and outright wickedness to surround and kill innocent and harmless people in their sleep without any provocation.

The Plateau Civil Society Organizations Forum hereby extend our sincere condolences to the government, families and traditional heads of affected communities over the unfortunate and irreparable loss and pray that the souls of the departed rest in peace. The killings in Plateau started since 7 September 2001, it has since grown into a massacre, and a barbaric act of violence cowardly engineered which counter every known attitude of a normal human being, who believes in the sanctity of human life.

As it is common with most of the attacks meted on communities, there is most often early warning security alerts circulated on the social media.

We are fully convinced that such information usually gets to the security agencies and relevant authorities but we are so worried and saddened that each time such planned attacks by same so called FULANI MILITIA are circulated, their plans are usually executed to a high percentage unabated.

What is really disturbing at this juncture is that:

There is hardly or never a proactive measure(s) by the security operatives to counter the early warnings circulated nor intercept the attackers in the act. The early warnings are often not mere social media assertions as most often taken, so dismissed by those who have the mandate to respond to such information.

It is no longer news that the attackers are not only after the lives of the community dwellers but truly their ancestral and God given lands to occupy.

From our observation and what is glaringly taking place on the Plateau is the sprouting of strange new Fulani settlements and herders at the footage of the hills all around the Northern and parts of the Central Zones of Plateau State. Meanwhile, the original owners of the lands have been displaced to the Internally Displaced Person Camps (IDPs) and other host communities where they are out of touch with economic realities.

The lands are being taken over and there is no government and traditional institutions fighting or promoting the returning of the IDPs to their ancestral land, while the grabbers are moving around freely and molesting citizens.

From on the spot assessment as at now, our records are that thirty (30) communities were attacked, two hundred and ninety five (295) dead, ninety eight (98) injured and hospitalised, one thousand three hundred houses burnt(1,300), two hundred and

The president  flanked by the other officials of the forum said twenty seven (227) motorcycles burnt, unquantified looting of food stuff and other items and thousands of persons displaced.

The feedback from survivors of the attack said that their attackers are Fulani speaking,

looking and dressed and so therefore they are not unknown gunmen, nor herders-

farmers’ clash, assailants or armed bandits as being reported by some.

The Fulani herders that we know and have been in Plateau State for several years do

not have the capacity to confront their host communities whom they have co habited

with for decades.

It is therefore, obvious that there are sponsors of these acts of criminality and

inhumane action on the peace loving people of Plateau State.

These incessant attacks have huge impacts on the formal education of the children,

creates an increase on number of vulnerable children, loss of breadwinners giving rise

to child headed households, healthcare is compromised, food security is greatly

threatened, loss of source of livelihood (mostly farming and mining), lowered quality

of life and loss of housing amongst other issues.

This action is highly condemnable and calls for accelerated actions to end these circles

of attacks on innocent, unsuspecting and peace-loving citizens.

We therefore recommend that the government, at federal, State and Local levels

should avoid selective response to alarms and tip-offs of a possible attack, they should

give a rapid response to distress calls and there should be a reconstitution of the

security body saddled with the responsibility of responding to these attacks. We

suggest the security should be a combined squad of the Military, Mobile Police, and

Civil defence.

The Traditional Rulers, Religious Leaders and Stakeholders of all communities should

have community police to compliment the conventional security forces, report and

investigate presence of strangers, the raising of structures, bringing to relevant

authorities all criminals within the community. All community stakeholders should

sensitise and create awareness on early warning response to issues of Insecurity.

All necessary measures should be put in place for citizenry to get back to ancestral

land and not remain in IDP camps or migrate to neighbouring communities.

Government should be more proactive in response to sending immediate relief to

affected communities.

Finally, we call on the state government and legislators at the state and national level

to revisit the establishment of the North Central Development Commission that would

facilitate the rehabilitation, reconstruction and resettlement of IDPs to their ancestral

lands.

Lastly, we want to caution on the sharing/spreading of unconfirmed stories and or

videos, images in conflict situations as this undermines the gravity of the situation.

In conclusion, we ask that the State Government, the newly constituted Plateau Elders

Forum, all critical stakeholders should please come together more often to work out

ways of ending this heinous crime against humanity.

By, giwa alex, jos

Transition committee chairmen across the seventeen local government areas of plateau state  has condemn in strong terms the recent coordinated attacks on innocent citizens in some communities in Bokkos, Mangu, and Barkin-Ladi Local Government Areas of the state saying  these attacks were unprovoked and  have resulted in the tragic loss of several lives and  destruction of property.

The Condemnation of the committee Chairmen is contained on Press conference held at the Nuj Secretariat 29th December 2023 read by transition  chairman of Wase  local government and ALGON Chairman honorable  Hamisu Anani.

The statement read in part said, we the Chairmen of the 17 local government areas  under the auspices of association of local government ( ALGON) Lament the renewed attacks across these communities especially in the eve of Christmas is a monumental tragedy and loss to the great people of plateau state and  calls for united efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible for these heinous acts.

We ALGON applauded the untiring efforts of the executive governor of plateau state barrister Caleb mannesah Mutfwang for his prompt response to action and the repeated calls on security agencies to tackle the situation headlong through the provision of logistics and the needed support in fishing out the perpetrators of this devilish act.

The body however  acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting the Nigerian Army in maintaining security through  the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja and the Commander Operation SAFE HAVEN for their commitment to addressing various security challenges facing Plateau and the Rapid response visit of the vice president Send kasim shetima GCON  and NSA Nuhu Ribadu to the affected areas on the plateau we thank you.

Plateau Genocide Hon.Fom Chollom Dalyop Calls For Full Investigation And Arrest Of Perpetrators.

By, giwa alex, Jos

Member Representing Riyom, Barkin Ladi local Government  Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives ,honorable Fom Chollom Dalyop has condemned in strong term recent genocidal attacks on three Local Government Areas of Plateau State, on Christmas Eve by blood  thirsty militias which has  been greeted by National and global condemnation from all well meaning and peace loving Nations and personalities.

It is on record that these attacks left more than 200 people dead, thousands injured and presently nursing wounds from guns and machetes, properties worth billions of naira destroyed, and  everal others now in IDP camps.

The Condemnation of the  honorable member is contained in a press statement issued 29th December 2023 signed by the member himself and made available to this medium in Jos.

According to him,a visit to some of the affected communities in Barkin-Ladi LGA(Hurum and Darwat in Gashish District, and NTV in Ropp District) on 25th December, revealed that these unprovoked and dastardly attacks were not only well coordinated, but also simultaneously executed.

The fact that these attacks came when the innocent victims were celebrating joy, peace and love associated with the Christmas season further confirms the wickedness of the hearts of the perpetrators.

These attacks lasted more than four hours, though the nearby security forces might have responded, their efforts were probably, largely hindered by the difficult terrain of the area. This no doubt is a cause for concern.

Worthy of commendation however, is the immediate response of the President and Commander in Chief of the Nigerian Armed forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He sent a high powered delegation, led by the Vice President, His Excellency, Kashim Shettima. He did not only condemn the wicked act of the perpetrators, but also visited some of the affected areas, to get first hand information.

He further directed that the killer’s and destroyers would be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.

We pray that this Presidential directive will yield fruit in no distant time, as it will not only bring succour to the affected persons and communities, but also serve as a deterrent to the perpetrators of this, and similar genocidal attacks. The security forces should therefore take advantage of this Presidential  directive and ensure that the needful is achieved.

In addition, the Federal government should consider a full scale investigation of these unprovoked and dastardly attacks in Plateau and other States, with a view to curtail these unnecessary pains inflicted on innocent and law abiding Nigerians. The Federal government should in addition, consider immediate despatch of relief materials to the survivors, most of whom are presently in IDP camps.

Furthermore, compensations for properties lost should also be a matter of urgent accomplishment.

Finally, the victims who have lost their beloved ones and property, as well as those injured and receiving treatment, are hereby requested to continue to remain calm and law abiding, and put their trust in God Almighty. We in the Legislature, and representatives of the people assure you all of our commitment to continue to make laws that will promote peace and peaceful coexistence.

Re Nigerians Lambast Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang For Attending Tinubu’s House Party In Lagos Amidst Killing Of 150 People.

By, giwa alex, Jos

Recent displays by some top media outlets within the Country have left a lot of us to wonder if actual, Credibility of information still matters. While Plateau State mourns the death of its Citizens who were gruesomely murdered in the two-day attack in Bokkos and Barkin Ladi LGAs respectively, a lot of people were using the sad incidents to gain some cheap political popularity.

More worrisome to us is the fact that top media outlets like Sahara Reporters who are supposed to be known for reporting happenings as they are, rather allow themselves to be used to circulate cheap lies and propaganda against the person of the Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang and Plateau People.

We all recall the Sad incidents that occurred on 24-12-2023 when over 30 villages were brought down by Fulani militias, over 150 lives were lost and thousands of people from the affected communities were displaced from their homes in two LGAs within the State.

The Governor in an interview on Channels Television and Arise TV respectively described the Sad event as Barbaric and condemned in totality such evil meted out to Plateau citizens. He narrated how organized and coordinated this attack was carried out and how the GOC received over 30 calls from different Red spots at the same time which eventually exposed the insufficiency of the military personnel in the State.

In that morning interview as well, the Governor stated clearly that he would be briefing Mr President about the attacks and he would ensure something is done about it to prevent future occurrences.

To our greatest surprise, in the evening when the Governor was seen with Mr President at his country home in Lagos, this same Sahara Reporters erroneously reported that the Governor went to attend the house party organized by Mr President while people were being killed in Plateau State.

That is not true. The Governor was fully in the state throughout the festive period. Though he was billed to attend the House party which was organized for the Governor’s Forum, His motive for being in attendance changed after the Sad incident occurred and we could all see and hear from the address of Mr president to the Governors. Though the gathering was to join Mr president in celebration of Christmas, the Presence of the Governor changed the discussion at the meeting, and Plateau Issues were raised and formed the basis for discussion at the meeting.

24 hours later, the President directed the National Security Adviser and the Vice president to come and take a first-hand assessment of the Plateau crisis, sympathized with the Governor and the people, and also directed NEMA to provide relief materials to the affected families and communities.

This majorly was the reason for the Governor’s visit to Mr President and to us it was timely. The Sahara Reporters should learn to verify stories before posting to avoid such errors in reporting which has reduced their credibility, drastically.

Gov. Mutfwang Visits To President Tinubu Attract The Presence Of VP To Plateau.

By, giwa alex, jos

The visit of Governor Caleb Mutfwang to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday has attracted the presence of Vice President Kashim Shettima to Plateau to see for on-the-spot assessment of the current security challenges for urgent action.

Governor Mutfwang who came prepared to provide dividends of democracy to Plateau people which was lacking over the years, is determined to explore all constitutional means to address the current issues.

The Governor has made it clear that his mission is to unite Plateau people to pursue collective development that will place the state on the trajectory of accelerated growth.

Some individuals who were trusted power in the past but lack capacity to performed noticed that Governor Mutfwang was raising the bar of governance in the state with his strategic engagements with development partners even before his swearing-in, they unleashed terror on innocent communities in Mangu Local Government Area where there has been no killings in the history of attacks in the state.

Because of the love the Governor have for the affected communities who were attack on Christmas Eve, he met with some stakeholders from the affected areas on Sunday and later addressed the troops of the Operation SAFE HAVEN in Mangu, where he urged them to redouble efforts in responding to the situation.

Interestingly, the Governor took off to Lagos this morning to briefed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the true security situation in the state, where he extracted great commitment of the President to addressing the carnage.

The Governor engagement with the President led to the directive to security agencies to fish our the perpetrators of the cruel act. He also directed the relevant authority to mobilize relief resources for the surviving victims of the unfortunate incident as well as those who sustained injuries. This is what was lacking in the past, the people were abandoned to their fate.

It is on record that there was no place that Governor Mutfwang blamed the Federal Government for lack of political will to tackle terrorists who have been occupying schools in some parts of the state.

The Governor recognized the immerse contributions of President Tinubu to curbing the carnage that engulfed Mangu and the current security situation in the state.

Within 7 months in office, his developmental strides have surpassed that of his predecessors who occupied office for eight years with nothing to show. Some felt if Mutfwang is allowed freely run inclusive governance in the state, Plateau would be better for it and that will end the political career of some politicians who have failed the people.

Plateau people know who they voted for in 2023.

ECWA Describes Killings In Plateau As Reprehensible, Ungodly, Satanic, Totally Unacceptable And Condemnable.

By, giwa alex, Jos

The Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA),has described the recent massacre of innocent Christians and destruction of their property in Bokkos and Barkin Ladi LG of plateau State is to say the least reprehensible, ungodly, Satanic, totally unacceptable and condemnable.

As the horrendous and genocidal killings and destruction of property and other means of livelihood by very wicked, evil, criminal militias in over 20 villages of Bokkos and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas of Plateau State is reprehensible, ungodly, satanic, totally unacceptable and condemnable, As a church, we are pained that this attack was carried out against innocent and harmless Christians who were climaxing preparations to celebrate Christmas, Unfortunately, their joy was turned into pain, weeping and sorrow.

The excruciating pains , sorrow and anguish of ECWA is contained in a strong worded press statement dated 27th December 2023 signed by it president Worldwide and Heads of Denominational Churches Leaders plateau State Rev. Dr. Stephen Baba Panya and made available to journalists in Jos.

The President prayed that God will comfort the families of the bereaved and the entire church of God; and bring healing and restoration to all the injured, appeal to relevant agencies of government and NGOs to provide relief materials to the affected communities and appeal for adequate deployment of security forces to forestall any further attacks.

He further add that if not for reasons of genocide and ethnic cleansing, what could be the reason for such unprovoked, premeditated, simultaneous and well-coordinated attacks on Christmas eve against communities that are predominantly Christian.

This he said speaks volume of the evil intentions of the attackers and their sponsors, which is very clear that some people have vowed never to allow peace reign on the Plateau.

Narrated further that reports indicate that well over 100 people were killed and many injured, with very gory sights of victims in the hospital with machete cuts of very beastly inhuman nature.

Stressed that the attacks were carried out on Sunday 24th December, 2023 between 8.30pm and 12 midnight, a period of almost four (4) hours without any form of response from the security agencies. The attackers, as was the case in previous attacks, had enough time to execute their evil plan. In some communities such as Maiyanga in Bokkos LGA, well over 80 percent of houses and crops were completely burnt down.

While commending the Plateau State Governor for his swift response to the attacks, and doing all he could within his power, in mobilizing security agents  as fast as he could, to stem further carnage, these attacks have again raised a number of questions.

However question how possible is it for such massive and well-coordinated attacks to take place across two local government areas without any iota of intelligence?

Why did security agencies fail to respond swiftly despite several distress calls? Why the choice of Christmas eve for the attacks despite assurances from security agencies to provide adequate security during the yuletide? Why have these militias been allowed to  continue doing their havoc despite the fact that their enclaves, from where they lunch these heinous attacks,  like Mahanga and other such enclaves,  are common knowledge to the general populace, and especially the security agencies?

While it is not my intention to draw any inference, it is pertinent to stress that these are questions that can diminish public confidence in government’s ability to decisively address insecurity on the Plateau and other parts of the country. These questions must be sincerely  answered if this tragedy  is to be prevented  in future.

Reminded that the attacks once again call for strategic intelligence, synergy, sincerity of purpose, commitment and the political will to address insecurity on the Plateau in particular and the country at large.

However urged the government and security agencies to track, arrest and prosecute the perpetrators and sponsors of this heinous crime against humanity.

The ECWA President reiterated that the message must be unambiguous that no one is above the law. The only way to rekindle the hope of Nigerians and build public confidence in the government is to bring all the criminal elements to book.

“Churches on the Plateau, especially COCIN, ECWA, Catholic, Baptist, Pentecostal Churches and many others, have lost many of our members in these attacks. I expect the government for once to take decisive action on this. Romans  13:3-5 states that those in governing authorities, are God’s  servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoers.”  Let this be seen to be the case in the case of Plateau.”

” As peace-loving Church organizations, COCIN, ECWA, Catholic, Baptist, Pentecostal  and other churches in Nigeria alike,  have invested heavily in all positive aspects of the lives of millions of Nigerians irrespective of their faith and tribes. It beats our imagination as to why we have been made to constantly face cold blooded deaths, been constantly subjected to IDP Camps, and our places of worship and communities outrightly uprooted by those we welcome to live with us.”

And use the statement  to call on the Federal Government of Nigeria under President Bola Tinubu and his security outfits to put a stop to this unwarranted menace and others against the Church in Nigeria and other innocent Nigerians that have been held captive in their own motherland.

Reverend Baba said there is so much of patience that individuals and communities can sustain as they have already taken more than their fair share of buffetings.  Also, the government must do all within its powers to resettle hundreds of thousands of Nigerians practically sacked from their ancestral homes by these criminal militias and other groups.

“Nevertheless, we as Christians take solace in the fact that no matter what, ultimately, our God is able to deliver us. No matter how long it will take, good will always triumph over evil. When the Israelites faced a similar situation, after several hundreds of years of oppression,  maltreatment and genocide by their Egyptian slave masters, Moses said to them, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again.” (Exod.14:13).”

” As we stand firm to see God’s deliverance, I appeal to all Christians to remain calm, peaceful and prayerful. Our help will surely come from above, the maker of heaven and earth, for our God, neither slumbers nor sleeps ( Psalms 121:4).”

Stephen Baba prayed that the year 2024 will bring forth greater love, peace, unity and progress for our beloved country Nigeria.

Nigeria’s Problem Will Not Be Resolved By Palliatives, Rev Mathew Kukah To Tinubu On Christmas Celebration.

“We are tired of promises and stories. We want evidence we can see and touch”

Our Reporter

Bishop Mathew Kukah, the Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, has expressed his perspective on the ongoing government palliatives, stating that they do not offer effective solutions to the challenges faced by Nigerians.

“Mr. President, Sir, congratulations and a happy Christmas. Now, you have what you prayed for, what you dreamt of, what you longed for. For the better part of over twenty years, you have plotted to be our President. For years, you campaigned for a new Nigeria through restructuring or overhauling the defective machinery of the Nigerian state.

“For years, you fought the military and other forms of dictatorships. For years, you fought for the victims of a deep state. For years, you sought to create an egalitarian society. For years, you sought a just society. For years you have built networks with individuals, communities and institutions.

Now is harvest time.

“You are on the driving seat now. Under your watch, Nigeria must turn the corner. Under your watch, we must end the ugly instrumentalization of religious, ethnic or regional identities. You have had enough time to think of the answers to many questions that are crying for answers. Your future and that of our country is in your hands.

” Mr President, you have no excuses before God or the people of Nigeria. Neither God nor history will not forgive you if you fail. This is our moment, our date with history. Now, all eyes and ears are on you. Our prayers for a united country are with you.

“We have seen the first faltering steps of policy decisions which have elicited a mixture of controversy, anxiety and praise. This is to be expected. You have promised us a Renewed Hope Agenda, but know that hope has worn thin in our dear nation.

“Nigerians have almost lost hope in the fact that a government can really and truly care for them. Nigerians have lost hope in the fact that our politicians will put our interests first and find a way to deal with the cancer of corruption. We had lost hope in being united again given the seeds of division that had been sown. Ignite our hope again,

Sir.

“We now have seen some renewed hope in your effort to run an inclusive government. We want an end to partisanship. The problems of Nigeria are deep-seated and they are based on a culture of corruption that has become the foundation stone of governance. This evil structure has to be dismantled.

“To be able to have credibility, your Renewed Hope agenda must be based on a solid foundation of faith and hope for the restoration of glory for our country. So far, a few of your key policies have unleashed a raft of suffering on the masses of our people. There must be a deliberate effort to restore hope on the faces of the poor and vulnerable in our society.

“We have heard the familiar stories of empty treasuries and the efforts at investigations. We wait to see if anything will be different. Lay the foundation for ending the unnecessary sufferings of our people”
