New Year speech by President Muhammadu Buhari for the year 2023, which happens to be his last as President.
My fellow countrymen and women, a very happy and prosperous New Year to you.
First, I would like to thank and honour the Almighty who saw us through the year 2022 and has given us the opportunity to see another year. Each New Year is an opportunity to reflect on the past year, reposition, and move forward with the New.
2. As we celebrate the opportunity to be alive in the year 2023, we must also acknowledge the passing away of our brothers and sisters who didn’t make it into this new year. May their souls rest in perfect peace.
3. This year is particularly important to me because this message is in essence valedictory. After having the honour of serving you, my compatriots, for the last seven plus years, my tenure as your President in the most revered tradition of our ongoing and maturing democracy must necessarily come to an end. In the next five months, we would have gone to the polls and elected a new president along with new governors and a plethora of other elected officials at both the national and state levels.
4. All these electoral and democratic principles are working in concert because of the transcendent beliefs, beyond partisan politics, of you the great citizen of Nigeria. In addition is my personal commitment and executive promise to see to the letter that the 2023 elections being diligently conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission will be free and fair. The collective electoral will and votes of Nigerians will be fulfilled, even in the twilight moments of my watch.
5. Reflecting on year 2022 allows us as a government to examine our legacies of successes and challenges. As we celebrate our wins and review obstacles, we all must understand that governance is a continuum, which still places a transitional responsibility on this administration to provide for the incoming government a non-partisan and objective roadmap for 2023. We as Nigeria; one country united under the will of God and actively growing as an indivisible entity, have been enabled year after year, decade after decade, to weather all stormy waters and emerge stronger and better where others have fallen and disintegrated. This has made us a unique nation across the globe and our continent.
6. In the year 2023, Nigerians go to the polls to exercise our right to vote and elect a new Administration; it is an important year for our country to ensure that we have another smooth transition of government, to whoever the people have decided upon. This administration’s landmark Amended Electoral Act will ensure that we have free and fair elections across the nation. We as Nigerians must also take responsibility to ensure we participate in ensuring that the 2023 elections are free and fair by not engaging in anti-state activities and other nefarious acts that may affect the run of the polls. We must also resist every attempt to be used by politicians to create unrest in any form to disrupt the elections. We, as government will ensure such activities are met with the full force of the law.
7. As our security agencies continue to make the country proud, we must continue to assist our patriotic forces by providing the much needed community intelligence. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that Nigeria remains safe and peaceful for us all. Therefore, we have a duty and obligation to support our troops and intelligence agencies by being alert and reporting anything suspicious. The fight against insurgency in the North-East region has continually recorded very clear wins in the past year. The Federal Government, and the Borno State government, have started the journey of returning internally displaced persons to their ancestral homes earlier taken by the insurgents. Also, over 82,000 insurgents with their families have surrendered to the Nigerian military. A number of surrendered insurgents are currently being processed by the rehabilitation (Operation Safe Corridor) programme. The fight against banditry, kidnapping and other crimes in the North-West and other regions is gaining momentum and showing very clear results. One of which is the resumption of Train Service along the Kaduna to Abuja corridor.
8. In the aftermath of the #EndSARS, our administration took heed and instituted the ongoing Police Reform programme based on a new Presidential Vision for Policing in Nigeria. This new vision is framed in a clear road map that transcends the tenure of this administration and it is predicated on six principles: a) Building Trust and Legitimacy b) Leadership, Accountability and Oversight c)Technology and digital media d) Community Policing and Crime Reduction e) Officers Training and Education f) Funding, Officers’ Welfare, Wellness and Safety.
9. This reform programme is very much in its foundational phase but has recorded noteworthy successes in improving police welfare and their emoluments. Other gains have been the ongoing training of 500 police cadet trainers to enable a better training regimen for the 2022 first batch of the 10,000 new cadets with an additional 10,000 set for 2023. In support of these reforms has been the provisioning of new material for the Nigeria Police to steadily improve on its constitutional responsibility to enforce law and order, protect lives and property as well as street level peace and security.
10. Despite the ongoing global economic crisis, we have been able to weather the storms. Inflation across the globe is at its highest, the Federal Government has been resolute through its economic interventions to remain above water during this period. 2022 brought a combined impact from ongoing wars and aftereffects of COVID-19. Though creating its own fiscal challenges, we have continued to subsidise our energy costs to buffer households from inflationary pressure of high energy costs. In 2023, we are focused on building on our Gross Domestic Product and sustain the huge surge in the non-oil GDP growth.
11. The Nigerian Start up Bill has been passed as an Act. This is considered a huge step in lowering our unemployment figures by boosting job creation and supporting the entrepreneurial drive of our youths. If you recall in my 2021 New Year speech, I had mentioned the need to secure the future of our youth recognizing that our young people are our most valuable natural resource, at home and abroad. In this regard, we worked with the legislature to develop an enabling law to turn their passions into ideas that can be supported, groomed and scaled across regions. 2023 will see the implementation of the Nigerian Start Up Act nationwide.
12. The year 2023 would, indeed, be a time when we would work to solidify on delivering key strategic priorities under our “SEA” – (Security, Economy and Anti-Corruption) Agenda. Some of the key priority areas we would direct our attention and strengths to include:
a. Focus on SECURITY; we will continue to engage, push back and dismantle the operations of both internal and external extremist and criminal groups waging war against our communities across the Nation. We will also focus on ensuring that free and fair elections would be held come February 2023. Our security forces are working in partnership to ensure the wins we have got in war against insurgency, banditry, secession and other crimes are sustained and more wins acquired.
b. For the ECONOMY; our focus would be on maintaining and building economic growth through the national economic diversification agenda that supports the goal of national food self-sufficiency and growth in non-oil sources. The ongoing infrastructure revolution by our administration will see us deliver the key projects across the Nation in power, rail, roads, ports and technology.
c. ANTI-CORRUPTION: On the anti-corruption drive of our administration, we have created new records in this fight, growing from 117 convictions in 2017 to 3,615 convictions as at December 2022. We as a government are committed to ridding our nation of all forms of corruption, through the collaboration with all the arms of Government to effectively prosecute this fight.
13. As we welcome the New Year, let us look with hope to 2023, a year to move forward as a nation towards unity, progress and prosperity. I offer my own personal felicitations, mindful of the various opinions and interpretations of our executive legacies. I welcome and accept both the accolades and criticisms in equal measure secure in the conviction that I did my best to serve our dear country Nigeria and I pray that the next President will also pick up the baton and continue the race to make Nigeria one of the leading countries of the world by the end of this century.
14. Long Live the Nigerian spirit of oneness, togetherness, and unity. Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria. A happy and prosperous New Year.

The aggrieved governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), better known as G5, are currently enmeshed in a crisis over its choice of a presidential candidate.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the G5, opposed to happenings within the PDP, are the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike; Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde; Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu; Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom; and Enugu State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. The governors are not ready to support their party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar until Iyorchia Ayu resigns as the National Chairman of the PDP.
After the marathon strategic meetings in London with the opposition, the face of the G5, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, “angrily” departed the United Kingdom (UK) for Madrid, Spain, to watch Real Madrid match this weekend.

Recall that Messrs Ikpeazu and Ortom are the Abia South Senatorial district and Benue North-West Senatorial candidates respectively of the PDP. A suspension or expulsion for anti-party activities will ruin their tickets in respect of the 2023 election.
A reliable source revealed that while it was true that Makinde and Wike shared the same view that they should support the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu; Ikpeazu and Ortom differed.
Ortom, Ikpeazu and Ugwuanyi are contesting senatorial elections in their respective states, whereas Wike has no immediate political interest except for his associates in Rivers state.

Their confidence and support he said has given them nation and the party at the national level to recognise him and give him the opportunity to serve in various capacities.
The Governor who is also the Senatorial Candidate for the Plateau South Senatorial District assured them that Tinubu and Shettima will work for all Nigerians and also ensure that there is equity, justice and fairness in the distribution of resources of the nation.
He advised them to vote for APC from the Governorship, State and national assembly as well as the President. He advised them against falling for the gimmicks of the opposition who are making promises without any record of performance.
Lalong said with his appointment as the DG of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, the people of Plateau State Shendam already have a place of pride when Asiwaju Tinubu becomes President.
Chairman Shendam Local Government Miskoom Alex Naantuam said the stakeholders have all agreed to vote APC from Top to Bottom because of the quality of candidates and their capacity to deliver.
APC Chairman Shendam Local Government, Elders of the Party, Youth and women leaders all said they were fully mobilised and convinced that the party will deliver its Candidates will come out victorious during the polls.

The Leadership of the House of Representatives is currently in the eyes of storm as the lower Chamber is accused of conniving with the Governor of Central Bank Goodwin Emefele and his cohort to loot the country Treasury.
Member Representing Jigawa in the House of Representatives Hon. Mohammed Kazaure made the accusations in an interview with journalists in Abuja the Nation Capital.
Hon. Kazaure said this is the reasons why the leadership of the House deliberately refused to allowed him to ask the Nigeria Apex Bank Governor questions which the House tactically avoid .
Hon. Kazaure who is highly disappointed with the leadership of the House, said it was a very good opportunity for him to ask the CBN Governor Goodwin Emefiele represented by her Deputy, two fundamental questions. What is the Twenty Nine accounts allegedly belongs to Central Bank amounting close to Eighty Trillion Naira met for.
And further added that money found in the mentioned accounts,is enough to fund the 2023 budget, pay the country current debts and keep the remaining in the nation reserve, but we keep borrowing when we have such money.
He called on the Journalists to ask questions and educate the people of Nigeria what is going on with our country and legislatures.
“Hon.Mohammed Kazaure ,the Deputy CBN Governor is in the House,I quickly rushed down. When I raised my hand, the speaker wanted to allow me to contribute, the Deputy Speaker adviced him not to allow me talk.”
“Nigeria should know why the Deputy Speaker did not allow me to contribute,I came with all my documents, the house is not questioning her about the economy of the country”
“CBN Governor is stock pilling money in different Accounts enough to solve the country debts ,fund the 2023 budget without borrowing and even increase our nation reserve.”
” These are the questions ,I wanted to ask the CBN Governor’s representative ,what are the money found in the account of the bank met for. The money is up to Eighty Trillion naira”.
” The question is why the leadership of the house refused me to to ask questions, secondly all of us have villages, some miles away from the capital city,no network ,banks and our people engaged in one forms of small scale businesses or the other.”
“In the next few months, you will see the frustration that will set in, that if a man come to bank with Hundred Thousand Naira, they will not give him cash,he most open account and ATM card is giving to him .”
” This a man that will stay close to a year without coming to the local government headquarters”.
“These are what I want the media to educate Nigeria of”.
Controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, is again in the news as usual for bad reasons,as he has warned Northern Electorates against voting for politicians who won’t grant amnesty to bandits who are hitherto causing havoc across the region.
According to the cleric, bandits are warriors who shouldn’t be killed but negotiated with.
The Islamic cleric disclosed this during one of his recent sermons.
“Don’t vote for those who will fight bandits. The fighters are our warriors in the forest……. Our people in the forest.
“So vote for those who after attaining power will call and negotiate with our people (bandits) so as to give them what they want for peace to reign.”
Almost Eight Years in his Second tenure as president of Nigeria most populated country in Africa, the citizens are practically eating in the dustbins ,the currency in disgraceful exchange rate to a Dollars, with insecurity of lives and properties ,and the Economy in a pitiable shape, Buhari has finally swallowed his pride to accept his leadership abysmal failure.
As President Buhari said he has tried his best for Nigeria to make things work, but regretted that his best seems not been enough as the country is practically locked down and stagnant economically, security and other spheres.
A report by The Cable revealed that the President said this in a documentary that was screened on Friday night at a private dinner organized by his family and close associates to celebrate his 80th birthday.
The documentary was tagged “celebrating a patriot, a leader, an elder statesman”. The president said there are some people who have made attempts to undermine his administration.
“I believe I’m trying my best, but still my best is not good enough. Because there are people around that think that they can intimidate me to get what they want instead of going through certain systems to earn whatever they want to earn. And there are some people who want to be clever by half.” the President was quoted as saying
President Buhari added that he will not miss his time in office because he is being “harassed.
“I wonder if I am going to miss much. I think I’m being harassed,” he said.
Speaking at the event, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo said the president is a “forthright, good and kind man”.
“Mr. President is a very humorous man and I think he would make a very good career in entertainment one way or the other when he retires,” he said.

There appears an end in sight for the current rift between some Governors of Peoples Democratic Party (G5) and the national leadership of the party, after several months of disagreement, ahead of 2023 general election.
Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel and Chairman, PDP Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) on Thursday night, played host to Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State, in a private visit at the Government House, Uyo.
Interacting with journalists after the meeting, Governor Emmanuel said the leadership of the party is opened to dialogue with the G5 governors, assuring all party faithful that the reconciliation of some of its aggrieved governors will see the party coast to victory in next year’s general elections describing all the PDP governors as brothers who show mutual respect for each other, Governor Emmanuel noted that aside participating in the campaign train, all the PDP governors are intact, working towards the interest of the party.
“We all came in as a family, whether you like it or not these are brothers even in the parable of the lost sheep in the Bible only one sheep got missing and Jesus Christ left the rest and went after that one, how much more when you have brothers that are up to five. “You turn around on a campaign platform you don’t see them, suddenly you will feel you need them, these are people you started together, I think I still feel empty that we are all not together on a campaign platform but when it comes to governance we are all together and we have mutual respect for each other.
“We listened to each other and we try to look at the way forward and I want to believe it is getting to that point where sacrifices must be made so that there can be peace.
“someone like me I am pursuing peace and I want peace to reign and once we can achieve that, our party will coast to victory”, the governor assured.
“Governor Ortom made a statement and I am sure you listened to him. I agree one hundred percent with him. We are ready to make peace and I can assure our party that these are governors who have structures, and something to show, these are governors who have capacity.
“We will do everything possible to put the house together on the 2023 campaigns, but when it comes to governance we are still as intact as ever”.
Earlier, the Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom said the G5 governors of PDP are still with the party, but expressed their displeasure over the leadership of the party’s inability to deploy its conflict resolution mechanism to resolve the internal grievances in the party.
Governor Ortom pointed out that dialogue remains key towards accommodating the interest of the party stalwarts, adding that the aggrieved governors never turned their back on dialogue and reconciliation, but only want terms that accommodate their interests.
“We were not happy with the national leadership of our party as it had not been able to deploy its conflict resolution mechanism to solve the internal problems and grievances that we have.
“Governor Udom is one of us, he is a governor like the rest of us, and in politics, dialogue is key towards resolving conflicts and problems that may arise as a result of conventions or congresses”.
Talking to each other will definitely strengthen the fortunes of the party ,and politics as you know, is a game of interest with no permanent enemy or permanent friend, but permanent interest.
“We have never said we have turned our back on dialogue and reconciliation, if the terms are met, why not, we will work if it fits in our own interest”, he added, insisting that disregarding them despite their respective huge support bases, was not the best solution.
