The traditional ruler was not economical with words when he challenged the military to go beyond the surface of their  investigation, and go down the root causes of the incessant attacks on the natives with the intention of driving them away from their ancestral land .

Stressed that until the security agents go beyond scratching the surface , but go deeper into  the root of the problems with the aim of unravel the immediate  and remote causes of the sporadic attacks on the citizens of the state, anything we are doing amount to waste of time, resources and energy. CISLAC Urges Niger Burkina Faso And Mali To Roll Back Plan To Leave ECOWAS”

Our Reporter

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) notes with dismay the events surrounding the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS) and the recent announcement of the withdrawal of the Republic of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso from the regional community of states. While CISLAC continues to condemn in totality the deployment of military junta to overthrow democratic governments in the region rather than resorting to constitutional measures, the gradual disintegration of a community which had hitherto served as best practice template for regional integration in Africa cannot be overlooked.

In a statement signed by Auwal Ibrahim Musa (Rafsanjani) Executive Director, CISLAC, he said; “It is imperative for Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso, and indeed the rest of the member states of ECOWAS to have a deep reflection over the collective milestones of the region including peace missions to member states; free mobility of people, goods and services; trade enhancement through the removal of customs duties and tariffs on commodities; as well as collective infrastructural development efforts such as the West African power pool leading to the construction of Diama and Manatali dams in Senegal and Mali respectively. At a time when the region is advancing discussions of a single market to further booster trade and development, it is completely disheartening to see leaders eschew the channel of diplomacy and dialogue to disintegrate the community.

CISLAC further stated that in pursuit of a more integrated and stronger community of states in the West African region, CISLAC is calling on:

1. The Authorities of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso to rescind their decisions to withdraw from ECOWAS because of obvious beneficial reasons. CISLAC urges state and non-state actors in the region to intensify engagements towards ensuring a more united ECOWAS.

2. The military authorities in these countries to urgently role out transition plans that clearly reactivate return to civil rule and quick restoration of democratic orders. These plans should consist of timetable of political activities leading up to the conduct of elections and transmission of power, within the shortest time possible.

3. The military authority in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso in the spirit of fairness, transparency, and accountability, to recuse themselves from transmuting from military to civil rulers. This is particularly pertinent as failure to do so would signal among the people and the world that the only intention of the junta was to grab powers.

4. The Authorities in these countries to ensure and prioritize free, fair, and credible elections capable of bringing about the choices of the people and thereby restoring their trust for democratic processes.

5. The people of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso to take advantage of transition programmes to rise and be counted by actively participating in the quest to return to democracy.

6. CISLAC also calls on the leadership of ECOWAS and all West African countries to revisit sanctions against the Republic of Niger and any of the above-mentioned countries which has caused hardship to the people of the country especially women and other vulnerable groups. It is imperative to recall the commitment of member states not to attack one another through the non- aggression treaty signed in 1976. Attack must not be only seen in the form of military engagement.

7. The leaders of ECOWAS in the interest of sustaining a peaceful, united, and prosperous economic bloc must continue to operate under the principles that made the region a template for best practices in fostering regional integration in Africa.

The community must recognize the clauses that protect each member state from interference in its internal affairs as well as the commitment not to attack one another. More so, in a period of growing trans-border insecurity, a more integrated ECOWAS is requisite for stemming the tides of insecurity in the region. CISLAC re-echoes the instrumentality of continued dialogue and sustained civil engagements for democratic stability in the region.

Plateau : The Case Of Allege Certificate Forgery Of Mohammed Adam Alkali Has Resonated As INEC Prepares For Re-run On February 3rd

Our Reporter

The alleged case of Certificate Forgery against Mohammad Adam Alkali in Petition No: EPT/PL/HR/08/2023 has resonated again, as the People of Jos-North/Bassa Federal Constituency of Plateau State prepare for the Re-run election slated by INEC for the 3rd of February 2024.

You would recall that the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, had refused to take decision on the issue of the allegation while delivering its’ judgment on the Appeal filed by Rt. Hon. Baba Hassan on the ground that the Trial Tribunal which sat in Jos, did not take a decision on it.

But, Pundits in Plateau State, who had monitored the Political development had questioned why the Trial Tribunal had left such vital aspect of the Petition unattended to, despite the fact that it formed the major grounds of the case against, Hon. Alkali.

Pundits have also began to question why the Nigerian ,Police that had testified at the Tribunal that Alkali is under the Nigerian Police investigation, had over months not started his trial, despite the fact that the representative of the Police’s evidence before the State/National Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal that sat in Jos is allegedly overwhelming.

Pundits have observed from the documents tendered at the trial Tribunal that the graduation date, classmate number, the score, result and the allegedly name claimed by Hon. Adam in his forged certificate have remained questionable and hence, have decided to call on the electorate of Bassa/Jos-North Federal Constituency of Plateau State to be weary.

It is on record that, Rt. Hon. Ibrahim Baba Hassan and his political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), had told the National/State Houses of Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal that sat in Jos, in Petition No: EPT/PL/HR/08/2023 that, the issue in contention in the Petition is the allegation of disqualification based on Constitutional Breach.

This was stated in Rt. Hon. Baba Hassan’s response to the Preliminary Objection (PO) raised by the 4th and 5th Respondents on the First Ground of the Petitioners’ Petition.

Rt. Hon. Baba Hassan also told the Tribunal that as Petitioners, they have established evidence that the 4th Respondent, Hon. Adam, had presented a forged Primary School Certificate to INEC, which was disclosed by their witnesses.

In part the Petitioners had stated that:-

“The Petitioners have also established by evidence that the 4th Respondent has presented a forged primary school certificate to 1st Respondent. This was disclosed by PW2 (The Education Secretary of the Jos-North Local Government Education Authority) on behalf of the issuing authority in Jos-North, Plateau State.

“The School record tendered by the 4th Respondent Counsel by way of Cross examination of the PW2 herein Marked as Exhibit P14 also confirmed that the Headmaster’s Report contained in the face of the alleged forged Certificate is totally at variance with Exhibit P14.

“Also confirmed that the alleged primary School Certificate is forged is the evidence of 4RW5, who testified under cross examination that he filed the Certificate with internal school record not common entrance record. And such evidence is evidence against self.

“The Petitioner also proved by Police Report through PW1 that an investigation is been carried out by the Police on the matter.

“Also the Petitioners established by evidence that the 4th Respondent has no minimum academic Certificate to contest the House of Representative seat of Bassa/Jos-North Federal Constituency because, none of his Certificate is bearing his name MUHAMMAD ADAM ALKALI as reflected in his INEC Form EC9, Marked as Exhibit P8”.

By, giwa alex, Jos

The is as the Inter- Party Advisory Council (IPAC) ,body  responsible for monitoring and discipline of all the political parties in the state said for the sake of justice , he has confide with the chairmen of the various political parties in the state that for the interest of justice ,no political party should participate in the election billed for Saturday 3rd February 2024.

The Inter Party Advisory Council IPAC, Chairman in Plateau State Hon. Abubakar Dogara Stated this in an interview with the Press to calm the already frey nerves among the officials and supporters of PDP in the state.

The IPAC chairman said the position of the body with  the chairmen of all the political parties in the state is that all political parties should  be allowed to participate in the election or no election .

The IPAC chairman in the state said the Appeal Court ruled in it judgement that all the political parties that participated in the last election earlier should participate in the Re-run election.

chairman of IPAC who  doubled as the Chairman of Social Democratic Party (SDP)in the state , Dogara further add that in an emergency meeting between the  Chairmen of the political parties in the state following the exclusion of one of the political parties Logo PDP, we agreed that an injury to one is an injury to all, as against this backdrop, as Chairmen of the various political parties in the state, we have agreed with ourselves that if PDP is not participating, all the affected political parties should withdraw their participation from Saturday 3rd February 20204 Re-run election in the affected Constituent.

Stressed that they were not adequately briefed that one of them we be disenfranchise from participation in the elections  based  on the Appeal court pronounced judgement, rather we were informed by the electorial umpire that the name of all the parties that would be participating  will be send to all the political parties within a week as resolution reached in the meeting that was held 9th January 2024 and today is 1st January 2024 no information was sent to us regarding  today development that one of the party we be prevented from partaking in the Re-run election.

And further said that is why the affected political parties on the return election sat and resolved that since one of us is unjustly denied participation in the election, that all the political parties will not participate as a solidarity to our sister political party PDP.

Because as political parties in the state, and by extension Nigeria at large, we agreed to support one another in time like this , because an injury to one , is an injury to all.

The IPAC chairman further add that the decision of the political parties was informed by the current fragile

 peace in the state.

The federal Chairman of INEC who was on ground to monitor the distribution of the insensitive materials ahead of 3rd February 2024 re-run election said is a normal electorial tradition that the disqualified political party did not participate in the Re-run election.

He cited copiously the case of INEC and Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC),to buttress his argument which he argued that Nigeria labour Party was not allow to participate in that faithful election.

The national chairman of INEC said the commission as law abiding commission , informed  the reason while will called the meeting of all the political parties as soon as the incident happened.

The federal INEC chairman further revealed that the judgment of the federal high court is yet to be set aside  by another competent court of law,as against  the backdrop, the judgement still subsists.

Sen. Lalong Caution APC Stakeholders In Plateau Against Inflammatory  Comments Over Supreme Court Judgement.

By, giwa alex, Jos

The Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District and leader of the APC in the  State Simon Bako Lalong has caution the party to stop any inflammatory statement over the recent Supreme Court judgement on Governorship Election .

Says the party has accepted the judgement of the Supreme Court on the Gubernatorial Elections in good faith and is awaiting the copy of the judgement to be able to analyse for future reference and strengthening of Nigeria’s democracy.

Lalong  made the caution while addressing the party stakeholders at the State Party Headquarters, Kalwa House Jos 30th January 2024 .

Further said the APC remains a strong and united family with dominance in the State despite the recent setback.

Stressed  that Supreme Court which has final say in Gubernatorial Elections has spoken and as strong democrats who believe in the rule of law, the APC in Plateau State and Nigeria at large have accepted the verdict and restrained their supporters from castigating the Judiciary or making inflammatory comments for peace and stability.

Lalong said it was unfortunate that some people have engaged in over-drive analysis of the Supreme Court judgement without seeing a certified true copy of the judgement to be properly guided.

He said the APC has applied for the certified copy of the judgement to be able to properly digest and see how it can work to enhance its fortunes in future Elections, judgement according to him is yet to be released to the party.

Senator Lalong however clarified the misconception going round that APC took a pre-election matter to court which was entertained by the High Court, Election tribunals and Appeal court.

He said “APC was never a party to the case between Hon. Kaze Vs PDP or the one between PDP Vs PLASIEC which went up to the Supreme Court and was dismissed against PDP.

” I want you to know that APC merely used the judgement given against the PDP to file its petition as a post election matter as provided by law.

“If you recall, the same issue was raised in Tinubu and Atiku where the tribunal decided that when there is a judgement against a party before an election, any other party can use it as a post-election matter to contest the verdict of an election.”

” As far as we are concerned, the judgement which said PDP did not have structure in Plateau State was given in 2021 when the High Court had the jurisdiction to entertain party matters. That is what stopped them from contesting in Local Government elections and also nullified Hon. Musa Agah’s victory. I want people including my learned colleagues and the media to wait for the Supreme Court certified judgement before they conclude on the matter”.

The former Labour and Employment Minister thanked President Bola Tinubu for his support to the party and urged the party members to go all out and secure victory in the Saturday rerun elections for Plateau North Senatorial seat and Jos North/Bassa Federal Constituency.

While welcoming the APC stakeholders to the meeting, State Chairman Hon. Rufus Bature said the party remains strong and will have to come to terms with the current situation with a view to coming out strong.

He assured the party faithfuls that the 15 House of Assembly members will be sworn in as there is no court order barring their inauguration as it is being peddled.

He also charged them to work hard for the victory of the party in the forthcoming rerun elections for Plateau North Senate and Jos North/Bassa Federal Constituency.

A minute silence was observed for victims of attacks in some parts of Plateau State with also a call on the State Government to do the needful in securing the lives of the citizens.

The meeting thereafter went into a closed door session.

The meeting has in attendance the APC Gubernatorial candidate Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda Goshewe and his running mate Hon. Pam Bot-Mang, former Governor, Prof. Sonni Tyoden, APC Deputy National Secretary Hon. Festus Fuanter, Member Representing QuanPan/Mikang/Shendam Federal Constituency Chief John Dafaan, former Speaker Hon. Yakubu Sanda among others.

The Former Governor of plateau state and former Senator of the Republic of Nigeria, Jonah David Jang has advised governor Caleb Mutfwang to set up committee to monitor members who are neither Bat nor Animal ,that are within the fold of the People Democratic party (PDP), in the state.

Jang said this is important because as the popular Adage goes, “Ones Beating Is Twice Shy” stressed that some people claim to be member of the party , but doing harm to the party by linking the secret of the party to the opposition parties.

Jang was speaking at the flag-off of People’s Democratic party PDP Re-run election held at Land Field event center ,Rayfield in Jos South local government on 27th January 2024.

He said this is imperative now that the storm against the party allegedly orchestrated by those who want to see that the party die in the state, so that they can continued with their unprogressive  rule that will destroy plateau state.

Advised governor Caleb Mutfwang to set-up committee to that effect and fish out those with two faces and show them the way out of the party if they fail to mend their way before they cause another problems in the now that we are just come out from the havoc they intended to do in the party.

However called on those  double faces members to purge themselves before the long arm of the law guarding the party on anti party activities caught up with them.

Jang berated APC in the state under former Governor Simon Bako Lalong led administration who leaves the state worst than he met it devoid of developmental projects after eight years as governor of the state without nothing to show for it.

Further add that after eight years as governor of the state, one would expect developmental projects, but regretted that the year under review witness monumental failure of simon Bako led APC ,and even left over 200 billion debt for the state.

Challenged Governor Mutfwang to make him and the party proud by bringing the party to National and international limelight through performance and developmental projects.

In another similar development, Governor Mutfwang used the fora to thank the party faithful for standing by him throughout his political traveil at the election tribunal, where he eventually comes out victorious.

He said it would have been difficult for him alone to pull through the political trying moment without you various support morally and otherwise.

But harps on members within the party that he described , neither here or there scavenging , advised such group of persons to advise themselves and stop the action because it amount to anti party which attract grievous consequences when you’re caught, in line with the party Constitution.

Appeal to members of the PDP, that is time for them to come together irrespective of their grievances, as enemies of the party especially APC in the State refuse to sleep until it sees the down fall of the party.

Mutfwang urged the PDP supporters that if there is anytime to demonstrate party loyalty, it’s now, urged them to come out on the 3rd February 2024 and overwhelmingly vote Musa Agah and Simon Mwadkwon to replicate their earlier votes for them.
