Insecurity In Plateau, Youths To Stem The Tides In Local Govts Through Surveillance Strategies.

By, giwa alex, Jos

The insecurity in plateau state has taken  different approaches as the youth under the auspices of Plateau Youth Council(PYC),has come together to faction ways forwards Stemming the tides of attacks in local governments in the state ,through surveillance strategies.

This is very imperactive because in every attacks,is mostly targeted on the youths who suffered aftermath of the attack as significant numbers of those arrested by the security agents were mostly the youth that were alleged to be capable.

Comrade Kumwen Walshak Musa, Public Relations Officer(PRO), Plateau Youth Council(PYC), plateau State chapter, who is the convener of the One Day Peace Summit held at Azi Nyanko Youth Center 20th January 2024.

Comrade Kumwen who said he is satisfied with the out come of the summit ,said  the program is a huge success because the targeted audience where around, as the guest speaker of the occasion Luka Pampe in the course of his lectures take us to the memory lane of history, and was able to expose things that was hitherto not know or the youth were not privy to know.

He said the reason behind the Peace summit is that  it’s no longer news that the state has suffered series of attacks from milias, even of recent, some communities in the state where attacked, many lives where lost, and unquantified properties destroyed by these militias.

Many youth were arrested for alleged roles they played at the unfortunate attacks, so you can see that the youth have a very vital roles to play as far as enthronement of peace and  security in the state, and by extension  Nigeria is concern.

He stressed that PYC as an ambrella body of  Youth on the plateau , it’s imperactive to bring the youth in the state together and chart the way forward.

Further add that if the youth agreed to chart the way forward, there would be peace and security, because they are part of peace vanguard.

On the way forward, he said it behoved on the Youths in the state, to first agree that they are ready to embrace peace in their various communities.

The One Day Peace and Security Summit which has it theme as”Redefining Plateau Youths Participation in Stemming the Tides of Community Attacks ln local governments and Surveillance Strategies” the convener said we have discussed extensively on the ways forward.

Add that the way forward is for us to first reach agreement to work towards the implementation of the resolution reached at the peace and security summit and ensure that it is implemented to the latter by those in the positions of authority.

NCSSR Urges Supreme Court To Revisit Appeal Court Judgement That Sacked PDP Legislatures In Plateau.

Our Reporter

Supreme Court Of Nigeria Complex, Abuja.

The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room (Situation Room) is calling on the National Judicial Council (NJC) to take action following the lead judgment delivered by Justice Emmanuel Agbim of the Supreme Court in the appeal of the Plateau State Governorship election petition wherein the Supreme Court chided the Court of Appeal panel that sat over appeals on legislative elections conducted in Plateau State.

Justice Agbim stated that the Supreme Court has held in a number of cases that nomination of candidates is an internal affair of a political party, and demanding that “the legal profession should wake up”.

The call is contained in a press statement dated 19th January 2024 signed by Y.Z Ya’u

Convener, Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room ,Mimidoo Achakpa

Co-Convener, Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room and Franklin Oloniju

Co-Convener, Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room and made available to this medium in Abuja.

The CSO’s in the statement said Of particular concern is Justice Inyang Okoro’s concurring statement to wit “My only worry is that a lot of people have suffered as a result of the Court of Appeal’s decision. It was absolutely wrong”.

Situation Room believes that there was a severe miscarriage of justice and subversions of the will of the people, caused by the Court of Appeal panel that sat over the cases of legislators elected at the State and National Assembly levels of Plateau State.

Given that the Court of Appeal was the final judicial authority over these matters, and in fact that the Supreme Court had set down precedents that were binding on the Court of Appeal panel, it is important that the NJC take steps to bring to book, the Justices of the panel in the Court of Appeal and other similar appeal panels who have acted in flagrant violation of set down precedents.

This action by the Court of Appeal panel has wrought and brought severe injustice and desecration of the people’s democratic right to choose their elected representatives and should not be allowed to go unpunished.

Situation Room calls on the NJC to take steps to re-establish the importance of judicial precedence in the judgment processes of the Court and ensure that Judges comply with this well-established principle of judicial practice. Otherwise, our court system and judicial traditions which have been violated by this appeal panel will continue to be the target of desecrations by judicial officers who seek opportunities to down our justice system.

The Situation Room is made up of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) working in support of credible elections and governance in Nigeria numbering more than seventy.

The Steering Committee is made up of: Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC), CLEEN Foundation, Action Aid Nigeria, Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), Emma Ezeazu Centre for Good Governance and Accountability (formerly Alliance for Credible Elections, Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC), Kimpact Development Initiative, Democratic Action Group (DAG), Women’s Rights to Education Programme, Joint National Association of Persons with Disability (JONAPWD), DIG Ebonyi, New Initiative for Social Development (NISD), Life And Peace Development Organization (LAPDO), Rural Youth Initiative,  Challenged Parenthood Initiative (CPI), Centre for Health and Development in Africa (CHEDA) and Josemaria Escriva Foundation.

Calls For Resignation Of The President Court Of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem Thickens.

By, giwa alex, jos

The call for the president of the Court of Appeal Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem to resign to escape the wrath Of Plateau People thickened.

The unrelented call was contained in a letter dated 16th January 2024 Captioned “An Open Letter To Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, The President Of The Court Of Appeal” signed by Comrade Prince Miaphen  , Youth Activist and made available to this medium in jos.

Comrade Miaphen use the opening letter to appeal to the President Court of Appeal Monica Dongban-Mensem, not only resigned ,but tender unreserved apology to the people of plateau , and by extension Nigeria for her unprofessional role played during plateau election tribunal which practically put the state and the nation at large in unwarranted tension.

The letter further reads:,

Dear Justice Monica,

Your elevation to the venerated position of President of the Court Appeal in 2020, was received with much euphoria across the Plateau, Irrespective of tribe, religion and political affiliation, the Plateau people were united in your support, optimistic that our sister had attained a position in which her conduct would return much glory and honour to our dear state, and indeed, esteem to your noble calling of law.

But on the contrary, not only have you desecrated your hallowed office, tarnished your career track record and brought great dishonour to the legal profession, you have equally brought opprobrium to the entire Plateau State, most especially, to your family.

Believe it or not, as it stands, you are incurably set for a fatal and humiliating crash in your sterling career, after almost attaining the pinnacle of  the legal profession – a profession that is expected to be the gauge of the conscience of society, an enabler of peace and order, which are critical ingredients for national development.

The hatchet job which your three-member panel of the Election Petitions Tribunal headed by Justice Oluwayemisi Williams-Dawodu executed on the Plateau, ostensibly on your instruction and to your satisfaction, was nothing short of a broad daylight robbery of the Plateau people’s mandates. It was a complete travesty of the law and justice, a betrayal of the people’s trust and a huge sacrilege that must not go unpunished. It is akin to the invasion of the entire Plateau State by a soulless group of armed bandits.

Against the popular wishes of the Plateau State people, your rogue Tribunal successfully sacked 16 Members of the 25-member State House of Assembly; two Senators and five Members of the House of Representatives, all elected on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and by deliberate design, in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The Tribunal’s lame argument was that the PDP didn’t validly nominate its 2023 candidates  on the Plateau.

It took the intervention of the Supreme Court last Friday, to halt the obvious electoral malpractice perpetrated by your rogue Tribunal, and save the people’s mandate for the Governorship of the state, which they undeniably bestowed on Barr. Caleb Mutfwang of the PDP. However, it is too late to save the positions of the state and national assembly members which your tribunal heartlessly sacked, because their cases stop at your stable, the Court of Appeal.

But you are quite aware that it would take at least another four years, for the Plateau people to undo the havoc which you have wreaked on the state through your evidently compromised Election Petitions Tribunal. While your position was supposed to be an immense blessing to the Plateau, it turned out to be an intractable curse.

You must be aware by now that rumour is rife back home that you used your position as President of the Court of Appeal, to conspire and connive with the enemies of the state to deny us of our best political representatives at both the state and the national levels.

Our people are really curious to know what spurred your intent. Was it to pave the way for your Shendam brother, Rt. Hon. Simon Lalong, to ascend to the Senate to represent Plateau South against the will of the people, since he was undeniably pummeled at the polls? Because you actually achieved that, Lalong is currently in the Senate, even though he knows he  was roundly rejected by his people. Or perhaps, it was to repay Lalong for appointing your daughter, Buetnaan, a judge of the High Court of Plateau State?

Or was it just to curry favour from the party at the center, being that the APC won the Presidential Election, or to justify the financial inducements you may have received from the selected politicians and traditional rulers, which you are being alleged to have sold out your conscience to? Because our people attribute the outcome of the Election Petitions Tribunal in the Plateau to your greed, selfishness and lust for lucre.

But to compound your case, it has been revealed that not only in Plateau did your rogue Tribunal wreak havoc and intended to upturn the people’s mandate. A similar scenario almost occurred in Kano and Zamfara States, to mention but a few.

My question is, how are you able to sleep at night, knowing very well that you have committed such a scale of atrocity against the people whom you were appointed to uphold their constitutional rights to justice? Don’t you fear that the few politicians and parochial interests you are trying to protect cannot defend you against the rage of the majority, which you have hurt by your actions?

If it’s true the saying that when a child washes his hands clean, he wines and dines with kings and queens; then the converse would equally hold, that when Kings and queens soil their hands, they ought to be stripped of their royalty and confined to the realms of the commoners.

My candid advice to you now is to humbly tender an unreserved public apology to the people of Plateau State, and demonstrate your remorse by promptly resigning your appointment as the President of the Court of Appeal. Otherwise, you may naturally be sacked by the Federal Government when it opens up the book on your stewardship; or even better, we the Plateau people will be forced to petition the National Judicial Council to demand your immediate sack.

I’ll further advise you to act appropriately now, before the rage of the Plateau people would boil over and nothing will be able to save you from their wrath.

As they say, a stitch in time saves nine.

Gov.Obaseki Hosts Consul General of China To State Banquet, Lauds Multi-Million Dollar Investments Into State’s Economy.

By. Godspower Eguasa, Benin

Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has commended the Government of China on its impactful relationship with the state, which has culminated in diverse investment enterprises and job creation in the state.

Obaseki made the remarks during the state banquet organized in honour of the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China, Ms. Yan Yuqing, on Tuesday 16th January, 2024, at the New Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City.

Obaseki said: “First, let me appreciate our visiting Consul General for her hard work. We met her first about a month and a half ago in Lagos, when we had the opportunity to see her before proceeding on a state visit to China, which she and Yongxing Steel Company graciously organized.

“For us, it is a very significant and important event, because it marks the relationship between a sub-national government in Nigeria with a global superpower. I was reading a few days ago — I think the Economists of London — the threats which China now poses to the world, particularly in terms of electric vehicles.

“The Chinese vehicles are now overtaking the global electronic vehicle market, which means that as we go into the future, China will transport the world. This is just a very small example of the kind of energy, the kind of resource that is locked in a huge country like China.”

Obaseki stressed the importance of a buoyant relationship with China which according to him portends great opportunities for the state, noting that there are 7 Chinese companies in Edo, hiring thousands of people, mostly of Edo extraction.

The Governor while highlighting laudable investments established in the state, courtesy of the Government of China, assured of the state’s continuous support and cooperation in promoting growth and building young talents among Edo residents, in partnership with the Chinese Government.

Obaseki said: “And from what we saw when we went to China, that is just a tip of the iceberg. Courtesy of the Chinese, today Edo hosts a steel company, we host a large ceramic tile-making company, we host companies that are making wood. In fact, Rongtai Wood is the largest MDF wood-making company in West Africa. We host a company making glass, the largest company in West Africa, and on and on. And from what we have seen, this is just the beginning.”

Obaseki added: “In the area of industrialization, it is very clear to us that the future of Nigeria cannot be based on imports. Without foreign exchange, we cannot import. We have to make these things ourselves. And that is why we are encouraging and working very closely with the Chinese to see how they can come in and take advantage of the opportunities we offer in Edo, Particularly the gas assets we have.

“Edo is one of the few places in Nigeria with a lot of onshore gas reserves. And that is what we are pursuing and we hope that the federal government will continue to support and encourage such investments.” The Governor thanked the Consul General for his visit, stressing on the warm and amiable reception of Edo people  to the Chinese community in the state, a reason they see themselves as a part and parcel of the state.

In her remarks, the Edo State Commissioner for  Education, Dr. Joan Oviawe, commended the developmental strides of Governor Godwin Obaseki in driving transformation across the different sectors of the state, noting that the state is happy and eager to continuously partner with the Chinese Government to drive continuous inflow of investments into the state.

Responding, the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, Ms. Yan Yuqing, commended the visionary leadership of Governor Godwin Obaseki for creating the enabling environment for businesses to thrive in the state.

While expressing the Chinese Government’s readiness to continuously support and partner with the state government in improving its education sector, especially vocational and technical education, Yuqing noted that over 700 citizens of China are happily residing in Edo with good testimonies from them about the hospitality and kindness of Edo citizens and residents.

She said: “This is my first visit of the new year; I have chosen Edo State. At the first moment when I arrived in Benin City, I had already fallen in love with this old and new city. It is an old city with a long history. It is also a new city full of vitality, innovation and power.

“Thank you so much that today I have a very nice Edo name, Adesuwa, and I am so excited that you have excellent government, especially the leader, the excellent Governor. Last year in November, he had a successful visit to China and it was full of successful results. So, this time I came here to consolidate on his successful results in China. First is to support your vocational education in Edo State.

She added: “I am so satisfied that today the Edo State Polytechnic, Fuzhou Polytechnic and Yongxing Steel Company, signed the MOU. Just like the Director of the education department mentioned, this year, five excellent students will go to China to study and all financial support will be from China. And you know that Chinese people, the same like Nigerian people, we are so friendly, so warm, so kind.

“I am so glad that here in Benin City, there are over 700 Chinese citizens living here. They are very happy to work, to live here and to contribute to the local economic and social development. They told me that here is their second motherland”.

The Supreme Court Judgement Save Nigeria Democracy, PDP Should Go And Try legal Luck In Open Court In Case Of State Assembly And Federal Lawmakers Who Falls Victims Of Appeal Court Coup——Solomon Dalung

By, giwa alex, Jos

The former Minister of sports Solomon Dalung  has applauded the recent Supreme Court judgement that affirmed the election of the Governor of Plateau State ,Barrister Caleb Mutfwang and others, as he said it has saved the country from anarchy if the judgement had taken otherwise.

Advice people’s Democratic party (PDP) in the state to try it judicial luck in the open court on the issue of the party House and National Lawmakers whose mandate were snatched away from them over flimsy legal technicality that they were not properly nominated, sponsored by the party whom could not conduct Congresses to elect Exco’s to pilot the affairs of the party in the state.

Solomon Dalung was speaking  through telephone interview with selected Journalists in Jos, plateau State Capital 13th January 2024.

Dalung said the decision of the Supreme Court in the election Tribunal involving Plateau, Zamfara, Bauchi, and other states , is indeed remarkable, and the supreme Court save Nigeria democracy.

He said this is because if the judgement had gone the other way round, anarchy would have taken over the nation of ours, which we would have not been able to predict where we would be today.

Barrister Dalung further said as against the backdrop , I would congratulate the government and the governance of Plateau State for emerging victorious at the Supreme Court with his freely given mandate.

He said the decision of the Supreme Court indeed have opened new vitals in our legal jurisprudence and has set agenda for an immediate and urgent reforms of the judiciary and other electoral laws.

This is because the two decisions from the court of appeal and the supreme Court , which are both court of appellate Jurisdictions of election matters had indeed generated a very serious controversy of justice , and on the other hand, it celebrate by people reform become eminent so as to restore confidence in our judicial process.

Said the pronouncement of the supreme Court on governor Mutfwang election , didn’t only contradict by lambasted the court of appeal.

On the question of what becomes the faith of the judgement of the state and national assembly election which the appeal Court has final Jurisdiction, and has determined it already

The plateau born politician said the position of the law is that the position of the court of appeal remains the law , that is the court that have the final Jurisdiction Over the matter.

He further explained that the pronouncement of the supreme Court didn’t enlarge the Jurisdiction Of the appeal Court to cover the judicial Coup where the mandate of the people was decided in the court room.

Therefore I will be congratulating governor Caleb Mutfwang of plateau State and Challenge him having emerged victorious , thus next stage on the table is governance because there are no more distractions for him.

Advice those who have suffered the Appeal court judgement , there is no any other alternatives opened for them , expect may be the party will mobilise their people and test their popularity through the court process.

As to whether the victims of that judgement can approach the court of appeal for the review of the judgement, he described the appeal Court it instance is fronty Officio.

Said the Supreme Court lack Jurisdiction on the matter.

So the only option open now for the people democratic party whose members suffered appeal court coup is pushing forward for their mandate by initiating a Court process.

That he said is the only weapon available to the party , but anything outside this, would be advocating for anarchy which Supreme Court has save our democracy from.
